Da Guan Lou Park, Kunming
Situated on the edge of lake Dianchi in the city's southwest. During the Ming dynasty, a local general was training an army here, and built a garden on the site. In 1682 a monk from Hubei came here to study and built a temple to Guanyin (the Mahayana Buddhist goddess of compassion) on the site during the Qing Dynasty, which now has over 300 years of history.
The park is named after Daguan Lou, a three-storey tower in the center of the park. Three stone pavillions in front of the building are supposed to duplicate the view from west lake in Hangzhou. From the top of the tower, you have a good view of Lake Dianchi and the western mountains. During Qing dynasty, this view was made famous when the poet Sun Ranweng wrote a 180 character long couplet about it. The now infamous couplet today adorns the front of the structure. Admission is 10ε per person, though climbing Daguan Lou itself costs an extra 2ε per person. To get there by bus, take routes 4, 54 or 52 from the city center.
