Blowout gas well in southwest China scheduled to be capped Tuesday

KUNMING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Experts have worked out a plan to cap a blowout gas well in southwest China's Yunnan Province and the operation is scheduled for Tuesday, a local government official said on Monday. Preparations for the capping operation are going on orderly in Luliang county, where the blowout occurred at 7:25 p.m. on Sunday, deputy county head Xu Desheng said. If everything goes smoothly, the gas well can be capped in two hours, Xu said. The plan to seal off the gas well has been approved and currently workers are preparing materials and equipment for the operation, said Xu, who is in charge of the disaster relief work at the accident site. Workers are sprinkling water toward the derrick and the mouth of the gas well to lower the temperature and prevent fire. At least 775 people were evacuated Sunday night. No causalities were reported, local government confirmed on Monday. A Sichuan-based company was drilling the gas well when the blowout took place. The blowout reached about 15 meters high. Monday night's tests show that more than 90 percent of the elements in the blowout gas is methane and other elements include mud and water. About 450 policemen, emergency militia men and workers are working in turn to control the blowout. Thanks to the prompt response from concerned departments, locals close to the accident site were evacuated timely and they are safe and sound, Xu said. The government has provided food, drinking water and clothing to all the evacuees. The county government of Luliang also allocated 100,000 yuan (12,500 U.S. dollars) for evacuated people to buy daily necessities. Luliang County is about 150 kilometers east of the provincial capital Kunming.
