Xiaguan
Xiaguan is a historic settlement that dates back at least as far as the Nanzhao period, when invading Chinese armies were slaughtered in the vicinity. These days, however, it's mainly a transit point for goods and travellers headed to Dali, Lijiang, Zhongdian and further north to Sichuan.
Practicalities
Getting In & Out

The cheapest option for transit to Dali are the frequent public buses and minivans, for around 1.5元 per person. If you're encumbered and don't want to catch the bus a taxi to Dali can be had for 30元 in most seasons. To reduce the rate, ask the driver to take the higher, older road rather than the freeway, which includes a 5元 toll.

Two of the bus stations are close to each other on the main street, and the third is run by the YNTAC company and is only used by those arriving on their coaches.

A public bus can bring you from the train station, located somewhat out of town, directly to Dali or the center of Xiaguan.

Accomodation
Accomodation options in Xiaguan are more expensive and not as varied as than those in Dali, so most travellers opt for immediate bus or taxi ride out of town rather than spending a night. If you do decide to spend a night, reasonable double rooms can be had for 80-100元 on the main street.

Shopping
A collection of markets fill up much of the real estate of central Xiaguan, making it an ideal place to shop for daily goods. If you are after arts, crafts, or rarer items, however, the plethora of specialty shops in Dali are a better bet.
