Tiger Leaping Gorge Town
Located a kilometre up a tributary to the Yangtse just before Tiger Leaping Gorge, this Naxi minority town has grown steadily in recent years as the primary tourist entrance to the gorge. The town runs on a north-south axis along the tributary river, with most business occuring on the western side of town, and a few hotels and the road to the gorge on the eastern side of town. Two bridges span the river.
Highlights
The local market is probably the most exciting part of town, bustling in the morning with locals busy buying provisions and stopping off for breakfast, though the mountains near the town are scalable for those with extra time to spend.

Practicalities
Getting In & Out
Many buses per day ply the road between Lijiang and Zhongdian, on which the town is an intermediate stop. To cater for the influx of tourists and the shortage of public bus tickets, private minibuses also ply the route between the town and Lijiang, with hawkers operating outside of Lijiang Bus Station.

Bus
Buses generally stop in one of three places: the direct tourist buses stop at the Tiger Leaping Gorge ticket office at the southeastern end of town, while through buses stop either at that point or across the bridge at the southeastern corner of town. This is also where most private minibuses hang out for those looking to hire a lift directly to Lijiang or Zhongdian. A number of smaller local buses stop just south of the market on the western end of town.

Getting About
Small enough to walk about, there were no taxis available when we visited. A bicycle could speed things up if you happen to have one with you.

Accomodation
With prices artificially inflated by the large number of tourists stopping off here on their way to Tiger Leaping Gorge, standard rooms with two single beds are available for around 60ε…ƒ, with various cheaper dormitory options at around half that price.

Food
Restaurants

For larger meals, a long strip of restaurants lines the eastern side of town to the north of the ticket office and road to Tiger Leaping Gorge. These offer everything from hot pot to boiled and fried noodles to standard fried dishes with rice at reasonable prices.

Communications
A solitary internet cafe is hidden on the third floor of a building on the far south-eastern end of town. Look for a blue and white sign with an internet explorer logo by a staircase next to a small restaurant. Being a monopoly, the price is a bit steeper than usual at 3ε…ƒ per hour but the speed is impressive.

Shopping
Your best bet for foodstuffs and general knick-knacks is the local market on the western side of town. A supermarket on the northwestern end of town may fill in the gaps, while a pharmacy nearby dispenses western and Chinese medicines.
