Menghai
Menghai is the largest city in western Xishuangbanna, and the seat of Menghai County. It is situated on a vast mountain plain, filled with rice fields and surrounded by a low ring of mountains.
Highlights

Out of Town Menghai is an excellent staging point for trips to the rest of the county. Prime attractions include Xiding's Thursday Market, Menghun's Sunday Market and the Octagonal Pagoda at Jingzhen. The curious may also like to take a bus south to the Burmese border at Daluo (two hours).

Practicalities
Getting In & Out
Menghai Bus Station is on the edge of town, close to the highway, which runs from Jinghong in the east (11元) to Simao and Lincang prefectures in the northwest.

Numerous buses service those destinations as well as Daluo (on the Burmese border) and Bulangshan to the south.

Getting About
As a relatively large and completely flat town, Menghai is ideally suited to bicycles, although walking suffices for most travellers.

Food
Local Snacks
Where other towns usually have a concophany of vendors hawking for your business, there seems to be a shortage of things to eat in this place - at least near the bus station. We found a solitary noodle shop 50m west from the bus station. It was positively packed, and the food was good.
